- Choose a chat type. Each type sets the AI up differently:
- Open chat: anything about your topic, your teaching or your academic work.
- Chat about a document: upload a PDF and ask questions about it.
- Critical friend on my teaching material: honest, specific feedback on something you’ve written for students.
- Rehearse a conversation: the AI plays a struggling student, a student disputing a mark, a student in an academic-integrity meeting, a patient, a client, a colleague or a role you describe.
- Marking calibration: work out how you’d mark a piece of work against your criteria and talk through borderline cases.
- Draft student feedback: turn your notes on a piece of work into clear, constructive feedback.
- Curriculum & standards mapping: map learning outcomes, assessments and activities to each other and to professional standards.
- Academic writing partner: plan, structure and tighten your own papers, grant applications and reports.
- Set your discipline and student level. These shape every reply: the examples it chooses, the terms it uses, and what it assumes your students already know.
- For a rehearsal, set the scene. Choose who the AI plays and describe the situation in a sentence or two, for example “second-year nursing student, failed the medication calculation exam twice, anxious and a bit defensive, works night shifts”. The more specific the scenario, the more realistic the conversation. The AI stays in character until you press “Stop and give me feedback”, then steps out and tells you what worked and what you could try instead.
- Attach a PDF (optional). Any chat can include a PDF of up to 15 MB and 60 pages: a journal article, a unit guide, a policy, a student’s de-identified draft. The AI reads the text, tables, figures and scanned pages. You can attach one when you start or later in the chat with the paperclip button. Only upload documents you’re entitled to use, and never anything with student or patient personal information in it.
- Write your first message and start. Choose “Start chat”. A typing indicator shows while the reply is written. Press Enter to send and Shift+Enter for a new line. Each Send button shows what the next reply costs, and you’re charged only when a reply arrives. If something goes wrong, you aren’t charged.
- Keep going, then continue in a new chat if you need to. A chat holds a set number of messages. When it’s full, “Continue in a new chat” has the AI summarise the conversation so far and starts a fresh chat carrying that summary and any PDF, linked to the original both ways.
- Manage your chats. Every chat is listed under “My chats” and in “Everything You’ve Generated” on your User Hub. You can rename a chat, copy the whole conversation, download it as a text file or delete it. Attached PDFs are deleted with the chat, or automatically after a period without messages.
- Turn the chat into teaching material. Under “Turn this chat into…” you can send the conversation to the Lesson Planner, MCQ Creator, Mind Map Creator or Case Study Creator. The topic is filled in from the chat’s title (which you can edit) and the recent conversation is passed along as context, so you don’t have to explain it all again. Each option shows its price on its own button.
Every action’s credit cost is shown on its own button before you commit to it. Nothing is charged silently.
